Sarah Robson:
Having used LCW as race preparation for Ironman Wales last year (doing full swim, but shorter distances on bike and run) I was determined to do the full to get the coveted 4th medal but also wanted to compare doing full Ironman distance over 3 days than all at once.
I love Tenby, the town fully supports both Ironman and LCW who both know how to put on an event. LCW caters for everyone as you can mix and match distances, do 1,2 or all 3 disciplines at distances you’re comfortable with. We arrived Friday morning, registered at the event village and collect THE best goody bag in this business. Swim is Friday evening at 6pm. I’ve now swum both ways and both are challenging but this swim was the most brutal I’ve ever encountered and scared me.
It was very choppy 1st loop but was happy with 45 mins for this, as it’s an Aussie exit I knew I’d be going back in but faced 8ft swell on 2nd loop and honestly if I could have seen a canoe I’d have called it but… I’d not get that 4th medal so I guess I just had to get it done and I did. Thank god I knew from previous experiences swimming there to take sea sickness pill and thankful wasn’t going straight out on bike.
So that was first advantage to doing it separately! Nice dinner and bed, nice breakfast and ready to bike. The bike is hard. Just as hilly as the swim lol. But I know it and we just paced ourselves stayed as a group and helped each other. Got it done. Again nice to rest after so feet up and dinner.
The marathon is not the same route as Ironman at all and it’s up and down the whole way, short & sharp or long they just keep coming. It’s hard. Harder doing it on its own and it’s a harder course than Ironman in my opinion but I absolutely loved it. I just smiled the whole day.
